Tips and tools for WordPress, Google and more
Domains
What would websites or email addresses be without domain names? If you start your own business, it's a good idea to have a company email address as soon as possible. After all, an email address such as hedu64@gmail.com does not look good as a company address.
Domain name
Suppose you are an entrepreneur who sells refrigerators. Which domain name would be better: „kuehlschrank-verkauf.de“ or „frigoshop.de“?
It depends.
If you want to get to the top of Google for the search term „refrigerator sale“ as quickly as possible without much effort, we recommend using a generic term such as „kuehlschrank-verkauf.de“ or even „kühlschrank-verkauf.de“. Disadvantages: the effect can soon fade. Second disadvantage: the website must still be well optimized for other search terms.
If, on the other hand, you want to build a brand and anchor your company in the minds of your customers, then it is better to choose an artificial word that you can turn into a brand.
Domain extension (top-level domain)
Which domain extension makes sense? .de, .at, .ch? Or would .com be better? What about .eu, .info, .net or .org?
If you primarily want to address national or even regional target groups, then you should use a country-specific top-level domain (ccTLD). This is because each country is assigned a two-letter code according to ISO 3166 as a domain extension. An exception is .eu, because the EU is not actually a country. Nevertheless, .eu was introduced as a ccTLD due to practical needs.
If you want to operate across national borders, then choose a generic top-level domain such as .com or .biz.
Other domain extensions:
- .name: for private individuals only
- .net: free for use (formerly for network administrations)
- .org: free for use (formerly for non-profit organizations)
- .info: free for use (intended for information providers
